Fabulous Falcons coming home!

It was a weekend of mixed emotions from the disappointment of a 3-0 loss at Akron to the jubilation of a comeback 5 set win (17-15) at Buffalo.

This week should be an exciting week with Miami coming to town on Thursday night and Western Michigan on Saturday evening. Saturday we will be recognizing Alumnae and the All-Anderson Team! It should be a great event as we close the doors on the Anderson Arena era (what I think we should call the Denise Van De Walle era with 28 years invested in Anderson) with some of the best players in BGSU history sitting in the stands. I can’t wait!

Things that make you go hummmm

Paige Penrod holds the Ohio High School state record for most kills in a match. As a freshman she is leading the Falcons with an impressive 3.02 kills-per-set. However, this week Paige showed off her back court skills and was selected MAC East Defensive Player-of-the-Week. She had more digs than any Libero in the East Division this week. Not bad for a left side know for her hitting.

Conference Stat Leaders:

Ashley Dunn 3rd in Service Aces-Per-Set .62

Kari Galen 2nd in Blocks-Per-Set 1.17

Paige Penrod 5th in Digs-Per-Set 4.25

Ashley Dunn 10th in Digs-Per-Set 3.75

BGSU as a team 1st in Blocks-Per-Set 2.88

Recently one of our incoming players was named National High School Player-of-the-Week. She also got her 1,000 career kill and 1,000 career dig. We can’t mention her by name yet, but we are so proud that she will be wearing a Falcon Jersey! Congrats…

I was reading our game notes on BGSUFalcons.com and found out that BG is 26-9 in five set matches since 2005. That's doing well under pressure!

Phantom of the blog!

Excuse the lapse in the blog entries. Five matches in one week with a young squad filled my plate a little to full. No wonder I gain weight during the season...my plate is always full. If you are a fanatical Falcon fan, then this is all old news to you. However, I felt I needed to post it anyway. Congrats to the team for a strong showing at the Pittsburgh Invitational. Three points away from a perfect weekend! The five set loss to Pitt was a heart breaker but the come back five set win over Eastern the next morning was sweet!

Highlights from the week included a townie being selected as the MAC East Defensive Player-of-the-Week. Congratulations to freshman Ashley Dunn. Her 99 digs this week (yes, I said 99) helped the Falcons to three victories this week. Another freshman recognized this past week was Paige Penrod who racked up 60 kills (yes, I said 60) and was selected to the All-Tournament Team at Pittsburgh.

Finally, I know the team really enjoyed the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Don't tell the players but they don't sing quite as well as the people that performed on stage. I found this out as they relived the Phantom performance on the bus with their own rendition of several of the songs. Thanks for the trip to the Benedum Center Coach! The show was awesome - the singing on the bus afterward...

ODDS AND ENDS!

Last night we came back from a 24-20 deficit to beat Cornell 3-0. It was a great night and the fans were awesome! Today we have IPFW at 11:30 and Oakland (Dunn vs Dunn) at 7:00 pm. It was a great home opener!

Before the game Coach Van De Walle was recognized for her 500 career wins (502 now) - the most of any coach in the MAC!

Ashley Dunn wanted to share a couple of pictures from Florida....

Finally....a little tune from a few of the Falcons to get your day started.

FAREWELL TOURNAMENT!

The final season in Anderson Arena starts this weekend as we host the Best Western Falcon Plaza Invitational! This will be the last Falcon Volleyball tournament held in the "the house that roars". A couple of cool things you should know about the weekend are below.

500 for Van De Walle!

Before Friday night's match with Cornell, Coach Van De Walle will be recognized for career win 500! She is the only Coach in the MAC with 500 wins! Don't be late.

Git R Dunn!

Saturday's match with Oakland will pit sister against sister. Freshman Ashley Dunn will face off with her older sister (senior at Oakland). These two Bowling Green natives will most likely be the starting libero for their respective teams.

Check us out this weekend!

Friday: Bowling Green vs Cornell @ 7 pm - Van De Walle honored before game.

Saturday: Bowling Green vs IPFW @ 11:30 am
Bowling Green vs Oakland @ 7 pm - Dunn vs Dunn

LAST WEEKEND AND THIS WEEKEND!

Playing at the University of Florida last weekend was such a great experience! The level of competition was extremely high and I feel like we can only get better from playing at the next level. Standing across the net from some of the best players in the nation was awesome! I also got to see my friend Taylor Unroe from back home who plays for Florida. One of the things I was really impressed with was the number of community members that came to support their sports teams. We were all talking about how cool it would be to fill Anderson up like that! Our invitational this weekend will be the perfect time to start. We're really looking forward to showing everyone how hard we've been working through preseason and these first few weeks of school. The last tournament at Anderson begins Friday night with Cornell at seven. We'd love to see you all there!

TODAY'S "TO DO" LIST...

What to do today...how about taking on #15 Colorado State this morning and finishing off the day with #6 Florida at their place. Sounds like a plan to me. We are very excited to have the opportunity to play two top 15 teams today! I believe this is the first time in BGSU history that the Falcons have played back-to-back matches against top 15 teams. I overheard one of our freshman say that this was a perfect way to start her college career. We like that kind of competitive spirit!
